end detour fort matanzas national monument

It’s amazing how much a child’s interests change over the years. For my almost 7-year-old, though strongly into superheroes, recently decided he’s interested in history or old things as he calls it. Towards the end of our trip when I asked him his favorite part he surprised me when he answered “the old Fort.”

So I decided on the way back we would visit another one. Making it easy on myself, we stopped back in Saint Augustine, but this time we visited Fort Matanzas.

In order to reach the fort you have to take a free ferry, across the inlet. All together it’s about a 30 to 45 minute tour.

The park rangers were very informative. We learned that the fort wasn’t home to any major battles and the only way someone would have died was of boredom.

While waiting for the ferry back we were lucky and spotted some dolphins and a sea turtle.

This quick detour was well worth it.
